herbs short film

on-site representative & supporting artist

august 2024

over the august 2024 bank holiday, i oversaw the shoot of herbs, a comedy short film.

my role being the on-site representative and a supporting artist.

good as gold, 209 mantle road, london se4 2ew.

a little bit about the short:

herbs: a comedy short about wanting community until we don’t. it explores how hard, awkward, and messy community can be, but how we all desperately need it.

have you heard of community? And being communal? it’s all the rage! as our world becomes more digital, sequestered and polarized there seems to be a real hankering for coming together. we talk about community! we write about community! we advertise about community! but how badly do we want to commune with our fellow humans?

herbs is about when community shows up and we aren’t quite sure if we actually want it. we’ve all had moments where we meet a chatty stranger or a neighbour who really wants to hang out or that very friendly seatmate on a plane or a train - fleeting moments of community that we say “oh god, no thanks!” to. community can be hard, it can be awkward, it can be messy - and sometimes we just want life to be neat. herbs is not neat.

sally is new to town. she’s headed to a chic communal supper club to meet a *new* friend, but when that new friend stands her up,  sally and her fellow diners are forced to commune and it doesn’t go exactly to plan. as everyone tries to play nice (or at least conceal their distaste for one another) tensions and wine consumption rise until everyone finally lets go and gets messy.

herbs is a slice of life awkward comedy blended with a surreal finish. we hope to create a comedy that accesses the pointed discomfort of a situation we all know that descends into a madness we maybe all wish for. we’re drawing on the exacting millennial portrait frances ha, the madcap mania and heart of 90s classic mrs. doubtfire, the ennui of adult relationships in the worst person in the world, as well as the 60s surrealist release of daisies. these films have influenced us tonally and visually, and we hope to create a sun-washed london summer (one can dream) exterior that leads to the buzzy and stimulating interior of our industrial chic restaurant.

our narrative centres a female voice, but transcends a gendered experience as we query how we bond and who we want to bond with. we’ve all felt awkward, we’ve all felt desperate for love and affirmation, and we’ve also all felt turned off by these qualities in others. herbs is a comedic study of how hard we all try to be perfectly likable and how much better it might all be if we let ourselves fly free.
